The leader Zico of Block B revealed his wish to be called an “independent idol.”
At a press conference for their first official album,
held at the Ax-Hall in Gwangjang-dong, Seoul, on October 17, Zico said,
“Many people call us ‘hip-hop idols,’ but actually, we want to be called
‘independent idols.’”
He continued, “When we evaluate ourselves, we find a
strong sense of self-supportiveness or independence. We participated in
working not only on aspects of our appearance, such as hairstyles, but
also on the general structure and choreography for this album. We didn’t
want to be restricted in a frame and wanted to try something that
people usually don’t do. We ask you to consider us an ‘idol’ group full
of various charms.
“If I were to select the theme for this album, I’d want
to add the modifier ‘freedom’ to it. We’ve set ‘pirates’ as our album
concept because the term comes to you easily when you think of freedom.
We tried to express emotions we went through during our time off, so
please look forward to it.”
During an interview in February, the group was caught up
in a controversy over making jokes about the flood in Thailand and
clapping with their feet propped up on the table. They have had some
time for self-restraint and self-reflection as they worked as
volunteers.
Their first official album, titled Blockbuster,
came out after they took eight months off, and it is composed of twelve
songs in total. including “Nillili Mambo” at the lead. Basically they
participated in all stages of creating the album, uncluding composing
the music and writing lyrics, and producing the album. Expectations for
this album are high.
They have finished holding press conferences and
showcases for the new album and will officially release it online on
October 17th and begin carrying out official activities in the broadcast
media.
