After building a high reputation as the second most popular movie in Korea, The Thieves (directed by Choi Dong Hoon, produced by Caper Film) has turned on a green light on its march in Hong Kong.
The movie has involved 12,890,000 moviegoers and was
invited to various kinds of film festivals only before opening in Hong
Kong on September 6 and ranking at the top of local box-office.
Even before the release of the film, the news that
director Choi and the best actors of Korea and China had come together
motivated eight different countries of Asia, Singapore, Malaysia,
Brunei, Indonesia, Taiwan, China, Hong Kong, and Thailand to purchase
the film in advance.
The Thieves holds second largest scale in Hong Kong, following the movie Haeundae by Yoon Je Kyoon that opened in 36 theatres. The Host by Bong Joon Ho falls on the third with the record of premiering in 20 theatres.
The movie’s premier in Hong Kong created a big stir as Jun Ji Hyun, Simon Yam, and Derek Tsang made an appearance.
It has been ten years for a Korean film to rank at the top of box-office in Hong Kong since My Sassy Girl by Kwak Jae Yong in 2002. In a sense that both My Sassy Girl and The Thieves star Jun Ji Hyun, the latest outcome became even more meaningful.
The Thieves have aroused positive feedbacks
from foreign press with its great story, attractive characters, and
realistic wire actions. After becoming a box-office hit not only in
Korea, but also in Hong Kong, people have become much curious of the
movie’s further outcome.
